Eternal Spring: Vice News Signs Licensing Deal for Canada’s Oscar Entry ‘Eternal Spring’

International media house Vice has secured the rights to Eternal Spring: The Heist of China’s Airwaves, Canada’s official Oscar entry. Directed and produced by Jason Loftus, Eternal Spring is the country’s official entry into the international feature film category for the 2023 Oscar.

Eternal Spring is a Mandarin-language animated documentary that depicts the plot set up by Falun Gong members to hack into Chinese state television. The neo-religious group established in the 1990s was among the persecuted groups in China and declared an illegal group by the state. The documentary explained how the plot to expose state repression was carried out.

According to Variety, the film is the first documentary, animated film and Mandarin language film chosen by Canada as an official Oscar entry. The film premiered in Thessaloniki, Greece in March earlier this year. Eternal Springs received phenomenal reviews and already won two awards at the 2022 Hot Docs Audience Awards in May.

Eternal Springs hits theaters in Canada on September 23 and in the US on October 14. Besides Vice, the documentary will also be marketed by a handful of outlets. These include:

  • Arte, for France and Germany
  • VG. for Norway
  • Current time, for Russian-speaking parts of Europe
  • RTS, for Switzerland
  • Al Jazeera Doc for the MENA region

Commenting on the success of the film’s pre-release, director Jason Loftus said Eternal Springs was the result of six years of effort. Loftus added that the main goal of the project was to bring the story to the world. He added that the partnership with Vice and the worldwide release scheduled for the fall would help achieve the level of impact they expected.

For Vice News, Vice President Brendan Kennedy said Eternal Springs covers all the topics the media company prioritizes, such as religious freedom, travel and creativity. Brendan also remarked that the Mandarin documentary had the best animation he had ever seen.
